Let's join hands to work together
RSIGST invites geospatial leaders to join hands and work together for project and capacity development by sharing common infrastructure and ideas to make India a Geospatial Nation.
RSIGST-Mapathon : Mapping the Future Together
The goal of the Mapathon competition is to use open-source data and mapping software to create themed maps. Mapping enthusiasts are invited to use crowd-sourced data, remote sensing, and observation, among other data sources. The main objective is to use free, open-source mapping tools to construct maps of Indian regions and to comprehend the possibilities of remote sensing data. The information gathered can be utilised to map India’s resources, manage the country’s climate and disasters, plan rural and urban areas, and determine future growth routes. The competition also seeks to strengthen the ability of the local population to adapt and use mapping to address societal issues and open up new prospects for developing India.
1. Natural Resources and Change Detection:
Explore the
mapping of natural resources and human-made features.
Dive into the
detection of changes in land use and land cover (LULC) with hotspots.
2. Disaster Management and Environmental Monitoring:
Delve into flood
maps, identifying vulnerable areas and aiding in disaster response.
Track phenomena to
mitigate their impact.
3. Infrastructure and Connectivity:
Map road
networks and assess road quality, facilitating better transportation planning.
4. Environmental Sustainability:
Explore land
degradation maps to understand and combat environmental challenges.
5. Healthcare and Population Dynamics:
Analyse
state-wise healthcare indicators and create maps for efficient resource
allocation.
Visualize
vaccination coverage based on health infrastructure, population distribution,
and age groups.
6. Agriculture and Livelihoods:
Identify crop
and plantation types for better agricultural planning.
Map amenities,
water sources, and quality, fostering sustainable practices.
7. Urban Dynamics and Quality of Life:
Assess
population density and traffic hotspots for urban planning.
Develop network
coverage maps for improved connectivity.
8. Water Resource Mapping:
Visualize
drainage patterns to address water management challenges.
Evaluate water
bodies, reservoirs, and wetlands for conservation efforts.
9. Participants
have the freedom to select their own problem area, but it must be distinct and
one-of-a-kind compared to the previously mentioned problem area.
Participants may take part as a team (maximum 2
members) or as an individual. Having members of a team have a foundational
understanding of mapping is ideal
Students : Research Scholars : Professionals : Anyone who has a keen interest in map making
Participants must adhere to the following guidelines when submitting their entries:
1. Each Participant/Team is limited to selecting only one problem area. Within that specific problem area, participants can opt for various sub-themes and are required to generate a maximum of 2 maps (one for each sub theme) based on their chosen sub-theme.
2. The final layout of the map must be submitted in TIFF/JPEG format with a resolution of 300 dpi.
3. In addition to the map, participants must also submit all raw files used to generate the map. This is necessary for accurate assessment and fair judgment.
4. A report must be attached to the map, which highlights the purpose and relevance of the map in relation to the selected problems. The report should also discuss the practical application of the map in the real world.
